Porto Musical began as a three-way partnership among WOMEX, and Recife's Porto Digital and Astronave Iniciativas Culturais. For two years it offered advanced conferences in three interrelated categories, Go Digital!, Go Brazil!, and Go International!, helping to develop and support the independent sector of the Brazilian music industry and enhance its cultural exchange with the rest of the world. And each night, in Recife's picturesque Praça do Arsenal, artists from the region, from all Brazil and from around the world performed to packed crowds of professionals and an enthusiastic public.
For the second edition, Porto Musical invited Minister of Culture and legendary musician Gilberto Gil to attend. He was so excited that he brought his ministry on board for our third year. With an additional partner, the ABMI (Brazilian Association of Independent Music), which saw its genesis at a WOMEX some years back, a new and bigger event was born: Feira Música Brasil. The new partners brought in a thriving trade and product fair, organized business meetings and added two new stages. Porto Musical ran the conferences and training sessions and was in charge of the international showcase programming.
In just a few short years, the Porto Musical Offspring grew from a small focused event for the development of an independent music industry into a major partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. Initially created as a three-year development project, Porto Musical is extending its life and formalizing its structure to create a stand-alone organisation dedicated to music industry development.
